Cotton growing interest on the rise in north Queensland as industry looks to droughtproof

A CSIRO researcher says drought in the Murray-Darling Basin has been the catalyst for renewed interest in growing cotton in northern Australia. The country’s 2019/20 crop was the smallest in 40 years due to prolonged drought in Queensland and New South Wales. Despite some relieving rain earlier this year, Stephen Yeates said the industry was trying to spread its risk and expand its growing area in northern Australia.
