Top marine biologist to be Melbourne Uni’s first female VC

The University of Melbourne has made history, appointing leading marine biology professor Emma Johnston as its first-ever female vice-chancellor. Professor Johnston, currently deputy vice-chancellor of research at the University of Sydney, is an esteemed scientist who has specialised in the impact of humans on marine ecosystems. The CSIRO director in February will become the university’s 21st vice-chancellor when she succeeds the outgoing vice-chancellor Duncan Maskell, who announced his departure in April.
