A new study by the Australian national science agency, CSIRO, found that the spread of drug-resistant bacteria in the community is increasing the risk of death from common infections such as urinary tract infections (UTIs), which affect about one woman on two and one in 20 men in their lifetime. Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria and other microbes become resistant to drugs designed to kill them, usually due to the improper or excessive use of drugs.
