Chile’s lithium and clean technologies institute takes big leap forward

A US consortium led by Associated Universities Inc (AUI) won the tender for Chile’s US$265mn lithium and clean technologies institute, which is designed to help develop the lithium value chain as well as promote solar energy and low emissions mining over the next 10 years. AUI comprises nine universities Harvard, MIT, Columbia, Princeton, Cornel, Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins, Rochester and Yale. […] The tender process took more than a year and also saw the participation of four consortiums formed by 11 Chilean universities, the industrial association of Antofagasta (AIA), copper mining promotion entity Corporacin Alta Ley and Fraunhofer Research Chile, as well as the Australian government research agency CSIRO.
