CSIRO research trip discovers ecological benefit to volcanic eruptions

When scientists onboard the CSIRO’s research vessel, the Investigator, visited Heard Island in 2016, they were excited to see its volcano Big Ben erupting. The remote, subantarctic island about 4,000 kilometres west of Perth, is right on the edge of the Southern Indian Ocean. Word of the eruption quickly made its way through the ship and soon, scientists were out on the deck witnessing a thin stream of lava emanating from the top.
