Mission Innovation Hydrogen Fuel Cell Off-Road Equipment and Vehicles Virtual Workshop

22 September 2021 - 24 September 2021

The Hydrogen Fuel Cell Off-Road Equipment and Vehicles Workshop will be co-hosted by the Mission Innovation’s End Use Working Group of the Clean Hydrogen Mission in partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office, the Ministry of Energy of Chile, the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources of Australia, and the European Commission.

The event will be held virtually September 22-24, 2021.

Government and industry technology developers worldwide are realizing the potential for hydrogen off-road equipment applications including in decarbonizing heavy-duty agricultural, construction, and mining equipment using fuel cells. For instance, mining vehicles account for an estimated 4 to 7% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Hydrogen use for such applications also has the potential to enable economies-of-scale for fuel cell technologies, hydrogen infrastructure, and the associated supply chain.

This workshop aims to explore opportunities for cooperation and collaboration in these industries. The objectives of this workshop are to:

  • Assess the state of the art for off-road heavy-duty agricultural, construction, and mining equipment,
    specifically using hydrogen fuel cells
  • Discuss technical and operational requirements and lessons learned from early fuel cell construction,
    agriculture, and mining projects
  • Understand current technology gaps and identify collaborative R&D opportunities
  • Identify refueling infrastructure challenges

The workshop will include a diverse group of stakeholders from government agencies, construction, mining,
and agricultural equipment manufacturers, hydrogen fuel and infrastructure providers, academia, and national
laboratories who are researching hydrogen for these applications.

The workshop will also feature focused breakout sessions where all workshop attendees are encouraged to
participate. The information gathered from these breakout sessions will be shared with workshop participants
and highlighted in the resulting workshop report. Information provided by the stakeholders during the panels
and the breakouts will help identify opportunities for collaboration, aligned with the vision of Mission
Innovation, a collaborative framework to accelerate progress in addressing our climate crisis.

Note: Due to space limitations, this invitation targets experts specifically in the field of mining, agriculture, and
construction equipment, as well as hydrogen and fuel cell technologies.
