Plant Science Safeguarding our Future Food Security
National Science Week Seminar
As part of NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK the Australian Society of Plant Scientists is organising events around the general theme of “Plant Science Safeguarding our Future Food Security”. The following events are organised in Canberra at the CSIRO Discovery Centre.
TALKS AT CSIRO (~60 min)
When: Wednesday 18 August starting at 10:00 am and 2:00 pm
Where: CSIRO Discovery Theatre (North Science Rd, Acton)
Several short, fun and engaging talks presented by CSIRO scientists explaining the pivotal role plant scientists and agriculturists play in feeding and clothing us all. They will explain how current research topics will help us meet the challenges posed by a growing world population and a changing climate. The talks will highlight the benefit of plant science to our society, emphasise the diversity of disciplines it involves and, hopefully, inspire young people to consider plant science as an exciting and important career.
TOURS at CSIRO (~60 min)
When: Wednesday 18 August starting at 11:00 am and 3:00 pm
Where: CSIRO Discovery Theatre (North Science Rd, Acton)
Conducted tours and briefings of the CSIRO research laboratories at Black Mountain, the experimental plant growth areas and the Australian Phenotyping Facility (automated ways of monitoring plant growth).
BUS TRIP TO FIELD TRIAL SITES (~6 hours)
When: Thursday 19 August: Bus leaves at 10:00 am and returns ~4:00 pm
Where: Coach leaves outside the CSIRO Discovery Building
This day trip to the Boorowa Agricultural Research Station (BARS) includes free coach transport to Boorowa (80 minutes drive), presentations about the phenotyping facilities at BARS and discussions by scientists about their current crop trials there. Lunch is provided (including vegetarian options). Strong shoes, warm clothes and raincoat/umbrella recommended.
