Join the WA Chapter of the AUS/NZ national node of the ECOP Programme

February 3rd, 2025

The UN Ocean Decade ECOP Programme was established to empower Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs), who self-identify as being early in their careers in any field related to the ocean, with meaningful networking and professional development opportunities with each other and with local to global institutions through the framework of the UN Ocean Decade.

The Australia and New Zealand (AUS/NZ) National Node of the ECOP Programme was established in 2024 and serves as the Programme’s focal point in the region, collaborating with the wider ECOP Programme and disseminating relevant materials, opportunities, and news to AUS/NZ ECOPs. It aims to connect and empower ocean advocates across Australia and New Zealand, fostering a community dedicated to making a difference in protecting our shared ocean. From networking events to conservation initiatives, the Node strives to support the growth and impact of early-career ocean professionals in the region.

Members of the AUS/NZ National Node based at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre in Western Australia have organised a WA Chapter of the Node and are delighted to invite other ECOPs in WA to join! Our idea is to complement the mostly online activities organised by the National Node with in-person networking and training sessions during which we get to meet one another, talk about our goals and aspirations, learn about each other’s research, share opportunities, and hatch new collaborations! In-person meetings are hosted at the auditorium in the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre, located at the University of Western Australia campus.

The more people interested in participating in this initiative the merrier, so please share the invitation with your friends and colleagues as well! All who self-identify as an ECOP are welcome in this group, but please note that our focus will be on addressing the career development needs of those who are at a post-PhD stage (or similar level of experience for career paths outside of academia). If you are a student looking for a similar group but that is more tailored to your needs, inquire about joining the Oceans Institute Student Society. WA is the only state so far to have a Chapter; If you are interested in starting a Chapter in one of the other states get in touch and I can help direct you!

If you’d like to sign up to the Chapter, fill out this short form, join our Google Group, and create a slide for yourself in our member directory 😊
