Publishing with Impact: 2-day writing workshop

March 23rd, 2021

Please contact alumni@csiro.au to find out the next course dates

Designed to increase the number and quality of papers published in high impact journals, this two-day workshop will motivate and equip early career researchers to communicate their research clearly and effectively. Participants will learn how to:

  • write well-structured sentences and paragraphs
  • use the paper’s structure to highlight their findings and conclusions
  • write powerful titles and abstracts
  • choose the most influential journals for their work
  • craft cover letters and responses to referees’ reports

The workshop is interactive, with participants encouraged to think and discuss why and for whom they are publishing. Examples are drawn from relevant scientific disciplines and participants learn what makes a great paper by analysing an example. Each workshop is tailored as far as possible to the needs of the group and each participant will be asked to bring a current writing project to develop during the workshop.

This program is suitable for anyone wishing to improve the impact of their scientific publications, but may particularly benefit PhD students, early career researchers/postdoctoral fellows, and international visitors seeking to maximise their publications during their visit.

The Workshop is facilitated by Dr Camilla Myers from CSIRO Publishing. Camilla spent 12 years as a journal editor and publishing manager before establishing the successful program of writing workshops in CSIRO for researchers in science, engineering and social science. She has a PhD in Zoology from the University of Cambridge and held a postdoctoral fellowship at ANU before moving into publishing. She holds the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and the Cambridge Certificate of English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).
