Quarter of heatwaves this century ‘virtually impossible’ without climate change, study finds

September 15th, 2025

In short:
A new study found around a quarter of heatwaves from 2000 to 2023 would be nearly impossible without climate change.

The analysis also indicated that 180 major carbon emitters, including Chevron and BP, are collectively responsible for around 50 per cent of the increase in intensity of heatwaves in the 21st century.

What’s next?
The team behind the study plans to study the contribution of major greenhouse gas emitters to fires and droughts, which may lead to climate litigation against fossil fuel companies.
