Living at a critical moment in Australian political and environmental history, Dr Alec Baille Costin alpine ecologist, botanist, conservationist, farmer was widely recognised as an international authority on the ecology of high mountains and high-latitude ecosystems and the founder of alpine ecology in Australia. […] Costin joined CSIRO’s division of plant industry in 1955, and was based in the Snowy Mountains, where he set up long-term study sites.
