Vale Dr Barry David Inglis

July 22nd, 2025

We are sorry to share the sad news that Dr Barry Inglis, inaugural CEO of NMI and Australia’s first Chief Metrologist, passed away on Friday 4th July 2025.

Barry has left a significant legacy with an array of achievements throughout his long and illustrious career. We are all the beneficiaries of his many contributions to measurement in Australia and internationally, which we celebrated in early 2021 when he was recognised as an Officer of the Order of Australia

As Dr Bruce Warrington (Chief Executive Officer and Chief Metrologist, National Measurement Institute) writes, “All of us in NMI are also the beneficiaries of his leadership, vision and care. A number of us were privileged to work with him, and I know that many of you who knew Barry will find this a difficult time. He was a rare human, a great leader and a good man, and an inspiration for us all. His many qualities included a generous spirit and the ability to see and bring out the best in everyone he met.”

NMI is planning a Memorial event at its Lindfield headquarters, to celebrate Barry’s life and achievements as NMI’s first CEO. We will send through details as soon as we receive them. For this occasion, NMI is preparing a compendium of messages and photos to give Barry’s family, and if you would like to contribute please send these on to Angela Samuel (angela.samuel@measurement.gov.au)

If you would like to add your own stories and memories of Barry to this post, please contact alumni@csiro.au
